Origins & Founding

Morning Star Catholic School was founded in 1960 in Orlando’s College Park neighborhood to serve children with special needs at a time when millions of students with intellectual disabilities were excluded from public education. Guided by the compassionate leadership of Sister Elizabeth Marie Stoup and the vision of Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley, it became one of five Morning Star schools established across Florida by the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine.

In its first year, just six children began their journey in a school built on hope, faith, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow. Since then, more than 2,000 students have walked the halls of Morning Star, each receiving an education tailored to their unique needs—empowering them to meet life’s challenges with confidence and dignity.

Today, Morning Star remains an accredited, not-for-profit institution committed to serving students with special needs. It is the only school of its kind within the Diocese of Orlando and has held this distinction since the diocese was established in 1968.

True to its founding mission, no child has ever been turned away due to race, religion, or financial hardship. Families from all backgrounds continue to find here a place where exceptional care and quality education come together—rooted in Catholic faith, compassion, and an unwavering belief in every child’s potential.
